What we are aiming at

These pages are built to aim at the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, version 2.2, at level AA. That is a target we work to, not a certification we hold. Nobody has audited this site on our behalf and we are not claiming conformance.

What that means in practice

The things that were done deliberately, and that you can check:

• A skip link. The first thing a keyboard reaches on every page jumps straight past the navigation to the main content.
• Real headings. One page heading per page, and the levels below it run in order, so a screen reader can be used to move around a page rather than read it start to finish.
• Visible focus. Anything you can tab to shows a clear yellow outline when it has focus. It is not hidden to tidy up the design.
• Text alternatives. Photographs carry alt text describing what is in them. Decorative shapes and background textures are hidden from screen readers rather than described pointlessly.
• The service-area map. It is a drawing, so it also carries a written description of the same information: the towns and regions covered, in text.
• Reduced motion. If your device is set to reduce motion, the moving parts stop. Nothing fades in on scroll, the hazard stripe stops travelling, and no content depends on an animation having run.
• Zoom. The pages can be pinched and zoomed. Zooming is not disabled.
• Colour. Body text sits on dark surfaces at a contrast we have aimed above the AA threshold, and the yellow is used for marks, rules and buttons rather than for running text.
• Nothing needed by hover alone. Every link and control can be reached and used from a keyboard.

Where we know it is imperfect

The display typeface is a condensed face used at large sizes for headings. It is legible at that size but it is a stylistic choice, and if it is hard for you to read, the body text on every page carries the same information in a plainer face.

The typefaces themselves are loaded from Google’s servers. If that request fails, pages fall back to the system font and remain readable.
